What is a belly skin or a mother's apron?

A belly skin refers to the loose stomach skin or overhang that one is left to contend with after a pregnancy or rapid weight loss. It is a stubborn stretch or pocket of skin that seems not to budge nor tighten up despite attempts in doing exercises to firm the midsection area. Some parts of the world call it the mother's apron or belly pouch but they all mean the same thing. For people who have a problem with skin elasticity, this problem is seen to be severe.

It is often the source of frustration since many attempted to remove it to no avail. Cosmetic surgeons suggest plastic surgery to correct or remove this excess skin. Surgery may be the fastest route but it leaves one with a not so nice scar in the lower abdomen area. It is not a good idea also when a person is likely to develop keloids or excessive scarring. Besides, why subject oneself to being opened up when there are other safer and less costly alternatives to minimize or remove the belly flap. Indeed, there are ways to resolve this issue without going the surgery route. But one needs to be patient and persistent in doing a few recommended exercises to remove that persistent belly flab for good.

What You Can't Do When You Have It

For one, a excess belly pouch is not any medical condition that prevents anyone from doing any activity at all since it is a harmless piece of loose skin. It is mainly hated due to its impact on a person's perception of beauty, in other words mainly aesthetics. Nobody get's sick because of a belly flap, unless of course it is loaded with abdominal fat, which is associated with many cardiovascular diseases

Many women are conscious about their bodies that they would rather die than being seen in a bikini with some skin hanging over their bikini strings. If you have this, going to the beach in a lovely bikini is the last of your options. It might also dampen a woman's intimacy due to embarrassment or insecurity.

What You Can Do About It

If you are the lazy type who does not like exercising, there are other ways to make them less noticeable.

One way is to wear loose clothes and pants since this is the only possible way to prevent the belly flap from hanging over the waist or belt. Another way is for women to wear any of those body hugger lingeries or stretch belts. If you love swimming and the beach, you can go for the one-piece swimsuit instead of two-piece bikinis. But for those who don't mind, as long as you are confident about how you look, just go for it.

Side Lunge & Twist

Standing Crunches thru Rockin Body

For those who have the discipline, commitment, and persistence to workout, there is good news since the stomach apron is proven to be minimized, but only if you are up to doing it the hard way and only if you promise to hold on until you actually remove them. It is not for the faint-hearted, it does not promise results in days or weeks but it is possible.

Here are some of the recommended exercises that need to be done in tandem to effectively remove the mother's apron:

Abs exercises

They do work by firming up your stomach muscles. When you do it regularly, the muscles get firm and will eventually reduce the loose stomach skin. However, these abs exercises need another partner to work effectively.

1. The Plank

The plank exercise is another effective way which targets your midsection area by strengthening the core muscles and get you that tighter and firmer abdominals.

2. Side Lunge with Twists

A very low impact exercise that helps tone and firm your ab muscles. Do this once per day

3. Standing Crunches

Why do sit-ups when you can do it upright? An example of a great standing crunch exercise is the one by Shaun T which will get you to lose that stomach apron in a groovy way. It is an effective exercise for people who are a bit lazy and don't want to get bored with regular exercise routines. A way to put fun in your quest to lose the belly flap.

Cardio activity a must

Yes, your abs exercises has to be partnered with a regular cardio activity, otherwise, it won't give much positive results. The key to lose that stomach apron is to lower your body fat. Any cardio activity like running, jogging, aerobic exercise, walking, briskwalking, dancing or swimming will do as long as you do them regularly. This will help burn the fat embedded in your belly flap and in your whole body. The first few weeks or even month may not give much results but persistence and patient works everytime. You will soon notice that skin overhang gets smaller and tighter as your ratio of body fat is reduced. Patience is the key and get moving. If you have time to spend for Facebook or Twitter, why not spend the same with an exercise to help your body.

Any of the exercises you know to remove belly fat will work well to help reduce and even remove the belly flap. The real key is just commitment and persistence. Do it regularly like three to four times per week and don't be impatient about the results. Stay positive and focused, commit to get rid of that dreaded mother's apron.
