What is a soul mate

Soulmates...do you even believe in the idea? I didn't and still don't, and I remain clueless because I have no idea what they are, or how to spot one if ever I come close to one. However, a recent experience seem to shake my belief, in my quest for answers. Since then, events naturally unfold escaping logic and I'm left searching for meaning. So what is a soul mate? Admittedly, I only have a vague idea of this concept as I often interrelate it with reincarnation.

What is a soulmate?

This concept about soul mates can be traced back to Greek mythology by virtue of Plato's Symposium. Therein, there was a discussion that humans are originally powerful but androgynous beings (with two sexes) with four arms, four legs, and one head with two faces. As they were powerful, they wanted to replace the Gods, so as punishment the same Gods decided to divide these beings into two. Since then, humans are destined to search for their other half in the course of their lifetime, hence the idea of soul mates was born.

About a year ago, I met my friend, albeit in an unusual way, at least for me. It is similar to finding a long lost friend. How will you explain talking to a stranger for the first time and felt like you've known each other for ages?

Nevertheless, we soon became friends despite the fact that our personalities are like yin and yang, or total opposites. Not to mention the age difference, as he is eight years younger and prefer roaming around every chance he gets while I love the stability and security of familiar places.

This person comes from another part of the world and we both having thriving relationships with other people, which we respect. I'm relieved that there is no chance I'm going to be involved with this person since we repel each other in that aspect. And yet, like opposites attract, we thrive in our diversity, talked as if there's no tomorrow, and even agree that time is not on our side. And the funny thing is, whenever we part, and the next time we get that chance to meet again, it seems like years have gone past, and we are back to zero, as if long lost friends meeting again!

The perplexing fact is that despite our differences, I notice and feel a deep bond connecting us. It somehow manages to transcend the stark contrast in our backgrounds and even beliefs (he is Muslim while I am a Christian). Our worlds and lives seem to be both in chaos but our personalities serve a healing effect on each other, on a spiritual level, that neither is able to explain.

Despite the majority of differences in our personalities, we both share the same passions, suffer the same longings, that each has not been able to share to anyone, until we met.

I found out that he also appreciates the mundane things about the world, and we both finish each other's sentences, as if reading each others thoughts and share the same quirks. In fact, hiding or lying to each other is not possible because for some reasons, each one knows when we do.

There is a sense of peace and calmness in the presence of each other. I find serenity in his presence that I can't explain. Apparently, my friend also feels the same way. When he is agitated over something, I am the person he wants to talk to, because according to him he will calm down after talking it out with me.

Friends should naturally clash and have some misunderstanding but that never happened. Sometimes we agree that maybe we should just start a fight, because there is really no reason to do so, and I have no reason to really get upset with him, if at all. Yes, we even agree to disagree.

Strange Similarities

Certain events I brush as mere coincidences started happening, and sometimes I think that an invisible force is playing a joke on us. We seem to live in a parallel world because our minds are so in sync that we often thought of doing the same thing, at the same time! And this scares me and left me scratching my head.

Many times, he would tell me about how his day went or how he felt, and I would be like, "that's exactly the same thing that happened to me today!" Or simple things like both of us thinking of sending messages to each other, same time, same second that our messages seem to criss-cross as each both arrive at the same time. There are times when I tried to make a call but couldn't get through because his line is busy, only to find out a minute later that he was also calling me at that exact moment. These are mere coincidences but it happens on a regular basis that we just laugh it off and ask each other a familiar word, "Again?"

All these have left me with more questions, but I decided to stop asking most of them for good. It is not everyday that you find a good friend who knows how you feel even before you open your mouth. So I am now left with just one..."Is it possible that I am face to face with a possible soul mate?"
